PPA, MLP and APP: a fan's guide to pro pickleball
Short answer: PPA is an individual bracket-style tour, MLP is a coed team league, and APP runs professional and amateur tour events. PPA and MLP announced their merger in 2024 but retained distinct brands and competition formats.

A pro pickleball clip can look familiar while the scoreboard looks completely wrong. One broadcast follows an individual tournament bracket. Another follows a hometown team. One tiebreaker rotates singles players even though you were just watching doubles. Before learning every player's name, learn what competition is on screen.
PPA, MLP and APP are three names a new fan will encounter. They are not three interchangeable labels for the same tournament. This guide uses the organizations' own pages, checked October 13, 2026, to explain the differences without treating old scoring summaries as current rules.
PPA: follow the bracket and the ranking story
The PPA Tour describes itself as a professional tour, with events that carry ranking points. Its current site lists Majors, Cups and Opens and directs fans to scores, brackets and event guides. For a newcomer, the bracket is a useful starting point: it shows who remains in a particular competition and who the next opponents are.
In its February 2024 merger announcement, PPA described its format as individual bracket-style competition, in contrast to MLP's team-based format. "Individual" here distinguishes a tour's tournament structure from a franchise league. It does not mean every PPA match is singles. Doubles pairs are part of the sport too.
A good viewing habit is to identify the event, the discipline and the round before judging the result. A singles win, a mixed doubles result and a men's or women's doubles result are different competitive records. One exciting clip does not by itself tell you how the player performed across an entire event.
MLP: your unit of loyalty is the team
Major League Pickleball's current explainer describes 20 hometown teams in its 2026 season. A match between teams contains four doubles games: women's doubles, men's doubles and two mixed doubles games. If the teams are tied after those games, they play a singles DreamBreaker.
That structure changes how you watch. Winning one doubles game helps a team's match position, but it is not automatically a complete team-match victory. The scoreboard has layers: the score within the current game and the team's progress through the match. Keep both in view when a commentator talks about a comeback.
The team identity also helps explain why a player you recognize from a tournament might appear in a different-looking uniform on another broadcast. PPA and MLP retained distinct formats following their announced merger. The same sport can have both a tour storyline and a team storyline without either scoreboard being an error.
The scoring detail that makes old explainers risky
MLP's 2026 explainer says its doubles games use side-out scoring and are played to 11 with a winning margin of at least two points. The DreamBreaker uses rally scoring, is played to 21 and switches players every four points.
Do not summarize that as "MLP uses rally scoring" without a qualification. For the 2026 format described by the league, that phrase misses the doubles-versus-DreamBreaker distinction. The league calls the system hybrid scoring. It is possible to watch both scoring systems within one team match.
A full rules guide settles details that a short fan explainer cannot. We are not reproducing every serving, substitution or ending condition here. If a disputed point matters, use the current MLPlay rules for the event. Our beginner rules guide is about the USA Pickleball rulebook and is not a substitute for every professional format.

APP: another tour, with pros and amateurs
The Association of Pickleball Players describes its events as bringing elite professionals, amateur athletes and fans together. Its current About page presents professional and amateur competition as part of the same event experience, alongside player experiences and other on-site activities.
The practical difference for a fan is that you should follow APP's own schedule, results and event information rather than searching a PPA bracket for an APP match. A professional sport can have more than one tour. Seeing a different organization name does not tell you that an event is an unofficial imitation.
APP's promotional page calls it the world's first and best tour. We do not turn the word "best" into an independent verdict. That is the organization's own marketing language, not a ranking established by this article. Choose what to watch by the event, players, available coverage and competition format that interest you.
A merger did not erase the difference
PPA and MLP announced completion of their merger on February 29, 2024. The announcement explicitly said they would retain distinct brands and their individual bracket-style and team-based formats. That historical source explains the relationship, but its old event counts and roster descriptions should not be used as 2026 season data.
For example, the current MLP explainer names 20 teams. A number in a 2024 release is not a reason to overwrite that current season description. This is a useful rule for following any fast-changing sports league: use historical releases for what happened then, and current competition documents for what is being played now.
Your first-broadcast checklist
Read the competition name, then the event and year. Identify whether you are following a singles player, a doubles pair or a team's match. Check the scoring system before assuming a receiving-side point was a mistake. Finally, use the organizer's bracket or results to understand what the match decides.
These steps take less effort than trying to memorize the entire professional landscape at once. They also make highlights more enjoyable. A spectacular shot is still a spectacular shot, but knowing whether it saved a doubles game or forced a team tiebreaker tells you why everyone on the bench is losing their mind.
Frequently asked questions
Are PPA and MLP the same competition?
No. Their merger announcement says they retain distinct brands and formats: individual bracket-style tour events and team-based competition.
Does MLP use rally scoring in every 2026 game?
No. The league's 2026 explainer says doubles use side-out scoring and DreamBreakers use rally scoring.
Is an APP result a PPA ranking result?
These are separately named tour competitions. Consult the organizer's own results and ranking rules rather than assuming a result belongs to another tour.
